About the Retreat:
The Lamrim, or “Stages of the Path to Enlightenment,” is a structured presentation of the Buddha’s teachings designed to guide practitioners progressively from the initial stages of spiritual development to full enlightenment. This retreat offers participants an immersive experience, focusing on meditation, contemplation, and discussion based on Lamrim teachings. It provides a unique opportunity to integrate the knowledge gained throughout the year into a cohesive practice. The text we will use as the foundation for the retreat is The Foundation of All Good Qualities by Je Tsongkhapa. As we cannot cover the entire Lamrim teachings in detail during the retreat, this concise text will serve as our guide. The Foundation of All Good Qualities is a profound summary of the entire Lamrim, containing just 14 stanzas that encompass the graduated path to enlightenment—“short enough to recite every day, profound enough to study for a lifetime.”It is essential for all participants to have a copy of The Foundation of All Good Qualities by Je Tsongkhapa. Additionally, having a copy of The Three Principal Aspects of the Path by Je Tsongkhapa would also be wonderful for the retreat. The retreat will comprise:– Meditation: Guided sessions on Lamrim topics, including developing renunciation, bodhicitta, and insight into emptiness.– Discussion: Group discussions and Q&A to deepen understanding.– Practice: Engaging in practices such as prostrations, reciting Je Tsongkhapa’s mantra, and purification practices.
Accommodation: Land of Joy wishes for everyone who visits the centre to feel welcome, accepted, safe and secure. Our accommodation options are very limited, with mostly single-sex shared accommodation and only one single room (which is sometimes needed by volunteers). This means single accommodation can only be offered to those who need it the most, but still won’t always be available. Please read the relevant sections of the booking form carefully.
Registration will be required for the retreat in September at Land of Joy.

SESSION Overview
TOPIC: COMPASSION IS NOT ENOUGH – WE NEED WISDOM
There’s a saying in Buddhism that a bird needs two wings: wisdom and compassion. The development of the courageous compassion of the bodhisattvas is the point of the path to enlightenment, but in order to be effective we must first put ourselves together: develop the wisdom wing.
In other words, we first need to go beyond our limited sense of self by understanding karma – realizing that we’re the creators of our own reality and not just victims of external forces – and delving deeply into our own mind and lessening attachment, anger and the rest and growing our virtue and goodness.
Then we can see start to realize that we’re all in the same boat: we all suffer for the same reasons and have all got the same marvellous potential, so how can we not have compassion for everyone?
The great bodhisattvas are fierce in their determination to never give up on sentient beings: they “think in terms of eons,” as His Holiness the Dalai Lama says.
SCHEDULE:
10:00 – 11:15 | Session 1
11:15 – 11:30 | Tea Break
11:30 – 12:30 | Session 2
12:30 – 1:30 | Lunch Break – in the Happy Yak Café

Awakening the limitless potential of your mind, achieving all peace and happiness
The Discovering Buddhism course is a beginner to intermediate level, 2 year study programme that will give you a solid foundation in the teachings and practice of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism. Establishing a daily practice is the 7th module, but you are welcome to join at any time.
This course was designed by Lama Zopa Rinpoche for students to study, explore and put into practice the graduated path to enlightenment, the lamrim. Originally based on Buddha Shakyamuni’s teachings from 2500 years ago in India. The lamrim was systematically organised by the Indian master Atisha in the 11th Century and by several other great masters from Tibet including Lama Tsongkhapa in the 15th Century.
Our resident teacher Geshe Rinchen Wangyal (Geshe La) will be teaching this module. This is an excellent opportunity to receive these Lamrim teachings directly from Geshe La. We are indeed most fortunate to be able to do so.
This course commenced January 2024 and runs for 2 years during term time on Thursday evenings online for 90 minutes and has 14 subjects, 13 of which are usually taught over 6 weeks. It is possible to join at any time during the course.
At the end of each half term and term there will be opportunity to meet with other students at the centre in Leeds for a meditation day to practice the meditations from the last subject and to socialise. These meditation days will be held on a Saturday 10am – 3pm, for this module it is on 12 April. If you can’t join the meditation days in person, you will be able to join them online if you wish to do so.
Please register for Discovering Buddhism here. for more information contact our course coordinator, Ruth: db@jamyangleeds.co.uk
