Global Tree Initiative and Woodland Project

Plant a Tree for His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Many people have expressed their interest in being involved with tree planting projects and Jamyang Leeds has now joined The Global Tree Initiative (GTI) which was launched at the beginning of 2020 by Osel Hita with the aim of planting 1 million trees worldwide as an offering for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who has frequently advocated the value of planting trees for many years.

The Global Tree Initiative now has partners in 53 countries and has, at the time of writing – Spring 2022 –  been involved in planting over 870,000 trees worldwide. It’s a truly wonderful global family to be part of. You can find out more on the GTI website  http://www.plantgrowsave.org and also the GTI Facebook page.

In the summer of 2020 Jamyang Leeds was offered a wonderful opportunity to be involved in an exciting new woodland project near Summerbridge in Nidderdale in collaboration with local wildlife organisation ‘Make-it-Wild’ https://www.makeitwild.co.uk. This became Jamyang’s first woodland  and  wonderfully on the first day of planting, we were blessed with a rainbow which felt very auspicious!

With much generosity from sponsors from many parts of the UK and around the world and the enthusiasm of many volunteers of all ages, we have now planted over 600 native trees on this beautiful site.

Following the completion of planting at the Nidderdale site the Jamyang Woodland Project has now entered a second phase. From Autumn 2022 we have the opportunity to plant another new woodland at Make It Wild’s new nature reaerve near Kirk Hammerton in the Vale of York.

As well as being dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama each tree can also have a personal dedication as a gift, to mark a special occasion or in remembrance. It costs £19.50 to sponsor a tree which includes the cost of the tree itself, a stake and tree guard for protection when young, and ongoing care.

FAQ

Can I plant trees as an individual and be part of GTI?
Yes, absolutely! You can dedicate any trees -and shrubs – to the Global Tree Initiative that you plant yourself in your own garden, allotment, community garden etc.
If you do please report the trees/shrubs you’ve planted on the GTI website https://plantgrowsave.org/report/

When planting trees as part of the Global Tree In initiative we are asked to keep in mind the Four Planting Pillars. These are;

1. Motivation

2. Be aware of your Motivation throughout the process of planting

3. Dedication (as well as to the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche you can also add a personal dedication, for example in remembrance of someone or in celebration of something and for non-Buddhists please make your own dedication according to your personal preferences).

4. Feel Delight in what you’ve done

It is then important to send in your report – you can do this here.

I’ve already planted some trees. Is it possible to include these?

The answer is yes it is! Osel recently decided that trees already planted can be retrospectively dedicated as part of the Global Tree Initiative. Just file your report here.
