Could you support the next generation of Buddhism in the North of England?

A living legacy

A gift in your Will is one of the most special and enduring ways that you can support the development of a living tradition for future generations. This could be either to support our work in general, or as a memorial in your name, or that of a loved one. The use of the funds can also be for specific projects according to your wishes. You can get in touch with us via the contact form online or by downloading the booklet.

Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds is home to one of the largest Buddhist-based outreach services in the north of England. Its educational programmes and community services are spread across the northern counties and allow all who are involved to develop mental wellbeing, meditation skills, improve pos- itive behaviours in day to day life and build lasting friendships. As a charitable organisation, the ongoing provision of these life-changing opportunities is very dependent on the financial support we receive from private individuals and charitable trusts.

Our Education Outreach work interacts with school and universities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of West Yorkshire. We provide meditation training, basic mindfulness techniques and teachings on Buddhist psychology and philosophy to over 30 different educational establishments every year. Teachers and parents often tell us they enjoy visits to our centre, and comment on how calm their children and students have become.

The Volunteer Programme trains individuals interested in meditation to lead sessions and classes on Buddhism, each term we train and support on average 5 new facilitators. These then support our other outreach work such as providing meditation sessions for local businesses, council and health service workers, and other satellite groups we mentor around the UK. Currently we mentor groups in York, Hull, Liverpool, Scotland, Cumbria, and even Romania.

Each year we bring to Leeds guest teachers from all over the world. Since 2015 we’ve had visits from Tibetan Lamas, international retreat leaders, best-selling authors, TV producers and our regular team of UK based leaders and experts in yoga, mindfulness, Buddhism and psychology.

How to make a gift in your Will

A legacy to Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds is exempt from inheritance tax. You can donate a fixed amount, an item or specific gift, such as property or shares, or what is left after other gifts have been given out (the Residue of your estate). These opportunities depend upon careful will-drafting which is best left to a qualified solicitor or will-writer. Whether you have already written your Will, or planning to do so, it is a simple process to include a gift to Jamyang Leeds. The following legal wording can be issued to your solicitor:

To leave a share of your estate: “I give [%] of my residuary estate free of all taxes to…

To leave a fixed sum of money: “I give the sum of [£] free of all taxes to…

… Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds, 12 York Place, Leeds, LS1 2JG for [delete as appropriate] the general use of the centre / for the specific use [please specify], and I declare that the receipt of the Director or other authorised officer of Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors and trustees.”

“You can see more and more how much of an emergency it is to have such a centre, especially regarding the present situation, because it shows the whole unmistaken path to liberation and happiness, the unmistaken cause of happiness and of the path to liberation, the unmistaken cause to the path to great liberation, full enlightenment, in other words, how to get out of suffering. What is the cause of suffering, how to get rid of that, is never explained and taught in schools, colleges, or universities.”
