According to Lord Buddha, we all have the potential for clarity, contentment and love and the rest of the positive human qualities. In fact, he says, these qualities are our natural state, and that the development of them, for one’s own sake and the sake of others, is the job of a spiritual practitioner.

Our main stumbling blocks are the deeply held assumptions that, first of all, attachment, anger, depression and fear and the rest are innate within us and therefore impossible to eliminate; and, second, that suffering and happiness come from the outside. As long as we believe this, Buddha says, we’ll always remain victims.

By becoming deeply familiar with the workings of our own minds through meditation and purification practices, by understand the natural law of karma that says that we ourselves create our own suffering and happiness, and, crucially, by delving into the logic of dependent arising, we can slowly loosen the grip of ego-grasping and begin to manifest our marvellous potential.

Australian-born Robina was ordained as a nun in the late 1970’s and has worked as editorial director of Wisdom Publications, editor of FPMT’s Mandala magazine and director of the Liberation Prison Project. Robina has brought inspiration to thousands of people around the world – from inmates in prisons to scientists at International Google Conferences – she has a wonderful, direct, clear, warm and at times an extremely funny teaching style.  Ven.
